FAQ

Why is IGP and DOP certification important?

IGP and DOP certifications are crucial when purchasing olive oil as they guarantee authenticity, quality, and traceability. These certifications ensure the oil originates from specific geographic regions, adheres to strict production standards, and supports local economies while preserving traditional farming methods. Ultimately, they empower consumers to make informed decisions, confident in the authenticity and quality of the olive oil they’re purchasing.

How exclusive is olive oil from Sicily?

Olive oil from Sicily holds a notable position in the market due to its distinct flavor profile, attributed to the island’s unique terroir and centuries-old olive cultivation traditions. Sicilian olive oil is often sought after for its quality, with many varieties holding IGP or DOP certifications, highlighting their geographic origin and adherence to stringent production standards. While available globally, Sicilian olive oil’s exclusivity lies in its regional identity, cultural significance, and reputation for producing some of the finest olive oils in the world.

What type of olive oil should I buy?

When buying olive oil, look for certifications like IGP or DOP to ensure quality as well as monocultivar oil. Monocultivar olive oil is the best type of olive oil because the oil is made from a single type of olive and never mixed. In order to receive all of the amazing health benefits olive oil has to offer, your olive oil must never be mixed with oils from different types of olives, preservatives, and fillers. Choose fresh oil with a vibrant color, fruity aroma, and balanced flavor profile, and opt for bottles packaged in dark containers to preserve freshness. Consider reputable brands to ensure authenticity and flavor.

How to check if your olive oil is authentic?

To check if your olive oil is authentic, try the following methods:

  1. Certifications: Look for certifications such as IGP or DOP on the label, which indicate that the olive oil meets specific quality and authenticity standards.

  2. Use Your Senses: Authentic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) should have a fruity aroma, balanced flavor with bitterness and pungency, and a vibrant color ranging from golden-green to deep green. Taste and smell the oil to assess its sensory qualities.

  3. Check the Label: Read the label carefully for information about the olive variety, country or region of origin, and harvest date. Authentic olive oils often provide transparent information about their production process

    1. Source: Purchase olive oil from reputable producers or trusted sources, such as specialty stores or certified distributors, to reduce the risk of purchasing counterfeit or adulterated products.

  4. Try the Fridge Test: Authentic EVOO may solidify or become cloudy when refrigerated due to its high levels of monounsaturated fats. While not foolproof, this test can sometimes help distinguish genuine olive oil from adulterated ones.

Is Sicilian olive oil healthy?

Yes, Sicilian olive oil is healthy, sharing the same benefits as other high-quality extra virgin olive oils. It’s rich in monounsaturated fats, antioxidants, and polyphenols, promoting heart health, reducing inflammation, improving cholesterol levels, and supporting digestive health when consumed as part of a balanced diet.

IGP CERTIFIED

IGP, or Indicazione Geografica Protetta, is a prestigious certification that guarantees the geographical origin and exceptional quality of our olive oil. This designation is a testament to the unique characteristics imparted by the specific region in which our olives are cultivated, reflecting the rich heritage and time-honored methods employed by our skilled artisans.

From Milan to New York

Zagarello Olive Oil is a staple in Italian kitchens. Sold in the heart of Milan, Italy, our olive oil has been a cherished ingredient in the homes and restaurants of Italy for generations. The rich, vibrant flavor of Zagarello Olive Oil embodies the essence of Italy’s passion for exceptional cuisine, elevating dishes with its superior quality and authenticity.

Zagarello Olive Oil vs. Store Brand

Unfortunately, some olive oil products on the market are not always what they seem. Many EVOOs found in supermarkets are actually blends of lower-quality olive oils or even vegetable oils, colored and packaged to resemble authentic extra virgin olive oil. These products may lack the authentic flavor and health benefits of pure EVOO, and can be misleading for consumers.

Zagarello EVOO is made with only one type of olive, the Nocellara olives of Partanna, Sicily. This carefully selected variety of olive is renowned for its high polyphenol content and ideal fatty acid profile, making our olive oil both delicious and nutritious.
